Warcraft was Blizzard’s take on a real-time strategy; World of Warcraft was its take on a massively multiplayer online roleplaying game; Hearthstone was a card game set in the Warcraft universe. Many are left wondering how the next Warcraft game might look, or what its gameplay loop may be, and some are cautiously cynical that a mobile game would be a poor addition to the Warcraft franchise. Popular Twitch streamer Asmongold is not one of them.

In a recent stream, Asmongold was quick to provide his opinion on a potential World of Warcraft mobile game teased by Blizzard in its Warcraft roadmap for 2022. He welcomed the idea, claiming that it’s an opportunity to engage more people with the Warcraft universe, serving as a gateway to get a new audience involved with the community. The streamer is aware that many people might be upset with the idea by default, but he is cautiously optimistic about the project. On paper, at least.

In Asmongold’s mind, there is nothing inherently wrong with a mobile game set in the Warcraft universe, and even if this spin-off ends up being pay-to-win – as many in his audience worry that it’s going to be – Asmongold claims that it’s no better than what World of Warcraft is right now, with World of Warcraft’s token representing an unofficial pipeline for players to turn their real money into boosts to obtain achievements and gear without personal gameplay effort on their part.

As for what the gameplay in this mobile spin-off game might be, Asmongold’s personal belief is that rather than seeing a World of Warcraft mobile client, citing the absurdity of doing a Mythic raid on one’s phone, the game might instead be all about tower-defense, not unlike countless popular Warcraft 3 custom maps.

Before the mobile game gets unveiled, however, players will find out all about the next World of Warcraft expansion on April 19th.
